Security Guard, the Guru
"The wise man eats pansit” - happy man
I have another job other than being an artist. I am the driver of my wife. Yup, it’s a job that I like to do - driving and specially so for my wife. She’s an insurance agent and I drive her around the metropolis specially to those places that’re hard to reach. And if it’s a job, I do get paid. It’s not much really, she just have to feed me. I am what you guys can call a modern day horse and cart, minus the whipping. You let the horse pull you wherever you wanna go just make sure you have enough hay to feed him on.
It was one of those days that I was driving her to a building in Makati where she have an appointment with a client. After I parked and got out of my car, I happen to pass by the security guard of the building who’s assisting a luxury car get out from the parking lot. He told me, “That my friend, is the rich daughter of the owner of this building. And they’re Chinese.” And I said confirmingly, “Well, aren’t almost all rich business folks Chinese?” Then he uttered one fact that comes only from a wisdom of a guru. Words that can only come from a seasoned struggler in life and whose boss happens to be Chinese. He said, “That really spells out the big difference between us Pinoys from the migrant Chinese. You see, when the Pinoy folks bring their children up, they’d tell them to study real hard so that later on in life, they’ll land in a good job. But not the Chinese, they tell their kids to study real hard so that later on in life they’ll have a good business.”
Indeed. Very true. Now there are many bright Filipino managers working for rich Chinese businessmen. Hey, Chinese or no Chinese, I say it’s all about outlook and attitude. And what’s great is that we have free will and free choice. It’s best to wisen up and study hard and learn to do what’s best.
