The Ring
“Laughter makes one laugh some more” - happy man
I can still remember that afternoon in July. I was trembling and sweaty from head to toes. Funny but the air-conditioner was really working it’s lungs out to freeze two people in the Adoracion Chapel of The Immaculate Conception Parish in Cubao, QC. I was kneeling beside MJ, my girlfriend then, facing the altar. Then slowly, (I was looking at MJ from the corner of my eye) I took from my pocket a small velvety box with gold linings and slowly I opened it and in a prayerful motion of lifting it up to God. Then suddenly I sensed MJ gaspingly awed and teary eyed and thinking I was going to give it to her, takes it from my hand. Then I pulled it away and I said, “What? What’s up? I’m praying here and lifting this ring to God.” (Of course I’m a jerk, and you’d think I’d have a dead-stiff serious style of asking MJ to marry me? I’m the funny man to those who do not know me yet.) Great! I made her laugh and that for me is a sign that she’ll marry me.
So there we were laughing and hugging and teary eyed, praising God for a life that we are going to share together. Good thing there’s nobody else but me and MJ in the chapel, or so we thought. Because God was there too and laughing with us. We never stopped laughing since then. We laughed at happy times, we laugh at hard times. We laughed after we get mad at each other. Now we have three darling daughters who laugh with us. And we all love to go to church too - laughing.
It is I can say a very fruitful family life. Sure we have our ups and downs. Sometimes we can afford to live financially free and sometimes not so free. Sometimes, we can afford to go somewhere and sometimes not. But one thing’s sure, we can always afford to laugh and enjoy life and look optimistically at our future. Thank you, God!
